State and town tax deferments for elderly, disabled

A pair town and state tax deferment programs offer relief to the elderly and disabled. The filing deadline for each is May 15, and applications may be filed for each at Town Hall. The qualifications are similar but not identical.

Town tax break

A The Ridgefield tax assessor’s office is now accepting applications from qualified homeowners for the Elderly Tax Deferment Program in the town of Ridgefield.

Applicants must be 65 years of age or older by Dec. 31, 2013. If the applicant is permanently and totally disabled, there is no age requirement, but a Social Security award letter must be provided.

The total household income may not exceed $55,000, including Social Security, for the 2013 tax year. The applicant needs to have resided at and paid real estate taxes on his or her residence for one year. Homeowners may defer as much of their tax bill as they choose.

The filing period is from Jan. 1, 2014, to May 15, 2014.

State program

The Ridgefield Assessor’s office is also accepting applications from qualified homeowners for the Totally Disabled and Elderly Homeowners State Program.

To qualify applicants must be 65 years of age or older by Dec. 31, 2013. If the applicant is permanently and totally disabled, there is no age requirement, however, a social security award letter must be provided.

All homeowners must meet certain income requirements. Adjusted gross income must be less than $41,600 if you are married and $34,100 if you are single.
