St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church will hold an organ recital on Sunday, April 6, at 4 to highlight its new Holtkamp organ.
The recital will include Concerto del Signor Mech (Vivaldi) by Johann Gottfried Walther, Suite du Deuxieme ton by Louis-Nicholas Clerambault, Praeluidium in G (BuxWV 149) by Dietrich Buxtehude, Liebster Jesu, wir sind hier (BWV 730 & 731) by Johann Sebastian Bach, Toccata and Fugue in D minor (BWV 565) by Johann Sebastian Bach, and Sonata No. II in C minor by Felix Mendelssohn.
The organist is Kyler Brown. Recognized as both an organist and conductor, Mr. Brown is the founder, artistic director and conductor of The Virgin Consort and is director of Music Ministries and organist at the Church of St. Jean Baptiste, both in New York City.
For a decade he served as music director and organist at the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, New York City, where he established an international concert series and served as the consultant for the restoration and completion of the church’s historic Æolian-Skinner Organ. His interest in presenting choral music performed in an informed period style led to his creation of The Virgin Consort.
Mr. Brown made his Lincoln Center debut in 1992 conducting in a performance of Handel’s Messiah. He has recorded privately for National Public Radio, the Frick Museum and the Methuan Memorial Hall Foundation. As an organist, he has presented recitals throughout the United States. His recordings of the Great Organs of New York City (Bischof & Vitacco Records) and Masterpieces from the Church of St. Mary the Virgin (Gothic Records) have been hailed by critics. Recently he recorded Respighi’s Suite in G Major for Organ and Strings in a new edition, which will be launched by Naxos in May. A graduate of the Purchase Conservatory (SUNY) and New England Conservatory, his teachers include Delbert Disselhorst, Carl Staplin, Richard Heschke and Yuko Hayashi.
St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, at 6 Ivy Hill Road, has a rich musical heritage in keeping with the Lutheran tradition.
The concert is open to the public. A suggested donation of $20 will benefit the Organ Fund. Refreshments will be served following the concert.
