David Johnston, 45, of Ridgefield was arrested today on 14 counts of federal health care fraud and 14 counts of making false statements relating to health care matters, according to the United State Attorney’s Office.
Mr. Johnston owns and operates Osteopathic Wellness Center, LLC located at 158 Danbury Road.
He plead not guilty today and was released on $100,000 bond.
If convicted, he faces a maximum of 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 on each of the health care fraud counts, and a maximum of five years and a fine of $250,000 on the counts of making false statements.
He was indicted on March 12 by a federal grand jury in Hartford.
The indictment alleges that Mr. Johnston engaged in a scheme to defraud Medicare and several health insurance companies by billing for osteopathic and physical therapy services that he did not perform, said Deidre M. Daly, U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut.
The indictment also reads that he misrepresented the nature of the services that were performed.
U.S. Attorney Daly stressed that the indictment is not evidence of guilt.
The case has been assigned to U.S. District Judge Robert N. Chatigny.
It is under investigation by the Office of the Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
U.S. Attorney’s Office in Connecticut is headquartered in New Haven.
