Ridgefield High School is grieving the loss of 15-year-old student Emma Sandhu, who was struck and killed by a car Friday night while walking on Ridgebury Road.

Stacey Gross, the school’s principal, said there was a moment of silence at the beginning of the school day today and that students, as well as faculty, could be excused at any time to meet with counselors.

“Obviously this is a tragedy and we will miss Emma greatly,” she said. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to her friends and her family. It’s very important during this sad time that we be here for our students and let them know that it’s OK to express how they are feeling.”

Dr. Gross added that she started the day with a full faculty meeting, advising teachers about what happened and how they can help students get through “this terrible, terrible event.”

“The kids are experiencing a wide range of emotions and the key is to get them to open up — there are some students who are very upset,” she said.

“Everyone’s terribly upset. People have been crying sporadically,” said  Dani Blum, a Ridgefield High School senior. “I saw someone break down in the library. We’re all just trying to help each other pull through.

“Everywhere I go somebody’s hugging a friend. “

The high school postponed its production of Meet Me in St. Louis Saturday night in respect to Ms. Sandhu.

“Due to the tragic loss of a member of the RHS community, tonight’s performance of Meet Me in St. Louis will be postponed until March 23 at 2 p.m.,” said Ruth Feldman, the show’s producer.

Ms. Sandhu was reported to be with a group of friends during the accident, Fire Chief Kevin Tappe said.

Police added that the case is still under investigation.

More information about the driver hasn’t been released and no arrest has been announced.

Chief Tappe confirmed he was not injured in the accident. The driver is believed to have stayed on the scene after the accident.
